Karen Denise Alston, CA | National Certified Domestic Violence Advocate
My Journey to Healing and Empowerment
Before embarking on this path, I made a heartfelt commitment to myself, my husband, my family, and to the memory of our dear friends—some of whom left behind children—whose lives were tragically cut short by the devastating cycle of domestic violence and sexual assault. In my pursuit of healing, I sought both spiritual and professional counseling, yet encountered roadblocks that failed to meet my immediate needs.
Survival required me to deepen my understanding of how this trauma had affected me emotionally, economically, psychologically, physically, and sexually. Despite working for over 30 years in the criminal justice field as a Paralegal and Office Manager and earning a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Phoenix, nothing prepared me for the reality of experiencing abuse. My training as a United States Army Veteran, where I learned to defend my country at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, never prepared me to defend myself against domestic violence and sexual assault.
My Healing Process
The first step in my healing journey was facing myself in the mirror. It was crucial for my freedom to understand my thought patterns and recognize how my past experiences influenced new relationships, impacting both my mental and physical health.
Becoming a member of the Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence and achieving national certification as a Domestic Violence Advocate played a pivotal role in my journey. These experiences empowered me to understand the intersection of my health and the trauma I endured. Acknowledging the impact of some personal choices—such as my inability to bear children, challenges with trust, low self-esteem, and a struggle to express compassion—was painful. These realities had been hidden behind a mask I wore far too well.
Commitment to Breaking the Silence
I am dedicated to partnering with organizations to break the silence around domestic violence and sexual assault. Breaking the silence means acknowledging abuse and promoting prevention through education and awareness. By recognizing the signs of abuse, we can empower individuals to take steps toward safer, healthier lives.
Turning Dreams into Reality
From this commitment, 4 the Jewel N U Global, Inc. and the “I Shall Speak 4 Her” Movement were born. Our mission is to build strong relationships and partner with agencies that are dedicated to enhancing and empowering survivors. Behind closed doors, it is not always easy to say “NO MORE” without professional support and resources.
As a united team, we are committed to providing the necessary resources, education, and support to help survivors choose a life free from violence. Together, we can foster resilience, healing, and hope for a brighter, safer future.
Together, we break the silence. Together, we heal. Together, we rise.
